Research Group membership starting Spring 2026 materially changes your competitive position — but the effect is not uniform.
MS Clinical Research
Hands-on NMR/HPLC/mass spec, drug delivery project, and a named PI letter directly address what these programmes value. Transforms borderline into competitive.
MS Regulatory Affairs
Analytical chemistry skills are core regulatory science competencies. Drug delivery project directly applicable. Distinguishes application in a technical applicant pool.
PharmD
Molecular drug narrative, medicinal chemistry background, and chemistry faculty letter differentiates from the typical applicant pool. Moves strong to stronger.
MEPN
Research experience is rare in nursing applicant pools. Prof. Franz letter is an institutional advantage specifically at UC Davis. Moves average to above-average.
MS Biomedical Informatics
Lab data management and quantitative methods are relevant but less decisive than for Clinical Research MS. Helpful, not transformative.
MPH
Adds credibility for quantitative/epidemiology tracks. Already accessible — Franz lab provides minor additional benefit but is not a game-changer for MPH admissions.
MS Nursing Science (post-MEPN)
Research experience before and during MEPN distinguishes within the nursing research track. Not applicable until after RN licensure.

Sequenced steps from February 2026 through application season. GPA comes first.
Confirm Franz Lab Start
Lock in start date, project, and weekly hours with Prof. Franz. Target 6–8 hrs/wk (drop to 4–6 hrs/wk during GPA-critical Fall 2026 quarter).
Begin Pharmacy Tech Licence & Applications
Apply for positions by April 2026. Prioritise clinical settings: Kaiser Permanente Fremont, UC Davis Health, hospital inpatient pharmacies. Retail acceptable only if clinical roles unavailable.
Register as Clinical Volunteer
UC Davis Medical Center or Fremont-area hospital. Even 2–4 hrs/wk now builds the nursing clinical portfolio (target 150–300 direct patient care hours by Summer 2027) in parallel.
Audit MEPN Prerequisite Status
Confirm whether Statistics (STA 13/100), Nutrition (NUT 10/11), Lifespan Development (HDE 100A/B/C), and Oral Communication (CMN 1/5/120) are completed. Schedule any missing courses in Summer 2026 or Winter 2027.
Add Introductory Programming
Python or R. Not required for all informatics programmes, but strengthens the application meaningfully. Consider online coursework during lighter quarters.

Choose Primary Path & Begin Personal Statement Drafting
PharmCAS (pharmacy) and NursingCAS (nursing) require distinct narratives and different letter-writer profiles. You must commit to a primary identity. The decision should be grounded in your clinical hour experiences in both pharmacy and nursing settings accumulated to this point.
Submit PharmCAS (if PharmD primary)
Submit pharmacy school applications. Target UCSF, UCSD, UCI, USC. Strong application: Franz lab letter, pharmacy tech hours, NPB prereq completion, 3.55–3.75 GPA.
Submit NursingCAS (if MEPN parallel or primary)
Target UC Davis, UCI, USC. Requires distinct personal statement emphasising nursing identity — not a rephrased pharmacy essay.
